About Us

York City Gospel Choir was formed in 2007 as a vibrant, dynamic and inspirational group, performing a broad range of contemporary and traditional Gospel musical styles.

The choir was founded by Ghanaian born musician, Kofi Mensah, an accomplished composer, arranger and producer, who for more than 25 years has directed a number of gospel choirs in London.

An inclusive 30-voice community choir, with members from the City of York and surrounding towns and with ages ranging from 16 to 70. The group performs to a very high standard and membership is achieved through rigorous auditions.

From the ever popular “O Happy Day”, up-tempo tunes like “Shouts of Joy”, mellow ballads like Kirk Franklin’s “Free”, wedding numbers like Whitney Houston’s “I Believe in You and me”, plus a host of original songs, the choir offers a dynamic repertoire of music to suit most tastes and occasions.

The choir performs at concerts, weddings, christenings, funerals, church functions, community and charity events, corporate and private functions, conferences, schools, prisons and festivals.

Kofi Mensah

Musical Director
Kofi Mensah [BMus (Hons), Dip Ed, Dip Man (MCMI)]

Kofi was born in Ghana to a musician father and grandfather. He studied at the University of Cape Coast for an honours degree in music and a diploma in education.

Kofi has been a committed Christian for over 25 years, and has recently moved to York from London. He is now an accomplished composer, arranger and producer. He has produced and collaborated on several albums, and has also directed a number of gospel groups and choirs, including Echoes of Calvary (UCC), Impact, Vision and Inspiration (all London).

Kofi’s song writing and arranging skills are illustrated in two of his instrumental albums, where he skilfully reworked a selection of traditional Christian choruses, creating a unique fusion of indigenous and western musical ideas. His fifth album, ‘In His Time’, was released in February 2006.
